Under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, the initiative is based at Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Partners include John Snow Research and Training Inc., University Research Co. LLC, Addis Ababa University and Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia. Maternal & Infant Health Issues in Ethiopia Each year in Ethiopia, an estimated 22,000 women die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Some 100,000 newborns also die annually. The Maternal and Newborn Health in Ethiopia Partnership (MaNHEP) is working to improve maternal and newborn survival in rural Ethiopia. MaNHEP focuses on increasing delivery of a basic package of interventions that can save women and their newborns. The partnership is working to get more women to seek out of maternal and newborn health services. Training activities for frontline health workers focus on improving clinical skills in maternal and newborn health care. MaNHEP's Community-based Maternal and Newborn Health Training Program uses culturally appropriate visuals to teach concepts. The partnership's approach encourages health extension workers to identify pregnancy complications before childbirth. Hands-on simulations provide opportunities for frontline health workers to practice what they learn. Training activities build on local knowledge and skills in maternal and newborn health care. MaNHEP-supported quality improvement teams address barriers that may prevent women and newborns from obtaining care. A pilot quality improvement project is looking at improving systems for collecting data about pregnancies.
