Williams Gym opened in 1907 with hot and cold running water and electricity, something the town of Covington had yet to experience. The upstairs of the old gym was renovated in 2001, transforming the space into a state-of-the-art performance/presentation/dance space highlighting the Arts at Oxford. The renovation preserved the indoor running track, where, if you can stand it, 22 laps equal one mile. A 1975 addition to Williams Gym now makes up the majority of the total gym area. Physical education classes meet, intramural activities and varsity basketball take place on the various courts. Upstairs in the mezzanine is an indoor tennis court, weight room, and an aerobics/dance lab. The new gymnasium also houses Oxford's Olympic-sized swimming pool where swim, scuba, and lifeguarding classes are held.
