Background Nearly 4,000 people in the United States are waiting for lung transplants. Because of a donor shortage, however, only about 1,000 of the operations are performed each year. And the shortage is getting worse. Doctors say the number of patients referred for transplantation is growing faster than the number of donors available. For two Georgia women, however, an organ donation has given them a reason to be thankful this holiday season. This video news release features the two recipients who have returned home for the holidays with a new lease on life. Soundbites include: Dr. Seth Force, Emory University School of Medicine thoracic & transplant surgeon; Dr. David Vega, director, Emory Heart/Lung Transplant Program; Mary Schaltegger, lung transplant recipient; Li-Chiung Brown, lung transplant recipient. Patient Info Approximately one-third of lung transplant recipients receive double lung transplants rather than single ones. The average survival rate for lung transplant recipients is seven years, however many patients live much longer.
