Background Significant mitral valve regurgitation, or leaking of the mitral valve in the heart, is a common condition that affects 250,000 new patients each year in the US. When the valve leaks, blood flows backwards or regurgitates with each heartbeat, requiring the heart to work harder. Until now, open-heart surgery has been the only effective treatment to repair a leaking mitral valve. A new non-surgical repair procedure is now being evaluated at Emory. This video news release features Emory's first participant to undergo the new procedure, which is still in a research study phase. Soundbites include: Dr. Peter Block, Emory Interventional Cardiologist; and Dick Kraus, Patient.
