Check Out Project | Multimedia Representations Of Teaching Columbia Center For New Media Teaching And Learning

The proposed project is a pilot test and research study on the effectiveness of documenting successful teaching practices in order to help students (pre-service teachers) learn how to teach more effectively. The observation and documentation process involves deciding which aspects of teaching practice should be represented, how best to represent those aspects, and how to structure learning opportunities with these representations most effectively. This process informs the students' development of lessons that they will teach and document in the subsequent semester. The design research questions for the project include: 1. What are the most effective ways to represent good teaching? 2. What tools are required to support the documentation of good teaching? 3. How do these representations improve students' understanding of good teaching? 4. How do these representations contribute to the students' ability to plan and teach effectively? This project seeks to address these questions by bringing together two innovative efforts currently underway at Teachers College: the development of a series of websites and "online exhibitions" documenting teaching in diverse NYC classrooms (see examples) underway at the National Center for Restructuring Education Schools and Teaching (NCREST), and the expansion of the use of VITAL for self-analysis and reflection in student teaching seminars for MA students in the Program in Social Studies.
