AIDS Volunteers And Poverty In Ethiopia

Description:

For more information, visit http://www.gs.emory.edu Kenneth Maes, a PhD student in the Anthropology program at the Laney Graduate School, is researching the impact of poverty on the use of volunteers to support a major AIDS treatment program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This program, along with many other public health programs in the developing world, tries to stretch meager resources by relying extensively on volunteers to help care for patients. Kenneths research brings to the fore some of the problems inherent in this approach, especially in circumstances where access to employment, food and daily necessities is precarious. February 2010
